Ryan Cheyne, People Director at Rentalcars.com (previously People Director at Pets at Home) has worked with Daniel for over a decade. Here, he gives us an insight into why he’s continued to choose SPE Resourcing for senior placements throughout his career.
I’ve known Daniel for a long time now, having worked together for the whole 10 years that I was People Director at Pets at Home. In those days, he helped us find a whole range of senior people for the team, from Area Managers through to Regional Directors, and a wide range of senior Head Office roles.
A few years ago I moved to Rentalcars.com, which has the benefit of an in-house resourcing team. However, Daniel and I kept in touch and, when a particularly challenging role arose, he was the first person I called.
We were recruiting for Head of Learning & Development. There are a lot of learning and development leaders out there, but I knew I wanted someone a bit out of the ordinary, and felt confident that Daniel would be able to help.
What I like about working with Daniel is that he’s happy to flex around your requirements. We didn’t want to jump into this key hire so, instead of drawing up a shortlist, he put candidates forward for the role as they came through. This kept the process moving and allowed us to refine our approach as we went along.
It soon became clear that we were looking for someone quite different to our initial brief; Daniel worked with us to reshape the job description and specifications so that he could headhunt the right people. That’s one thing that makes Daniel stand out – he really takes the time to understand not just the client and business, but the role that he’s recruiting for too.
This enables him to act as an additional stage of the recruitment process – conducting a full search on appropriate talent, then approaching and interviewing possible candidates before putting them forward. This offers an extra level of reassurance, as he only recommends people he genuinely feels are right for the role.
Daniel has a traditional approach, but it really works. He’s very rigorous and commercially astute, and I’ve always found him to be very easy to get on with. We’ve built a good relationship over the years, but he never takes anything for granted and he always goes the extra mile.
